The 3rd SIG13 Symposium

 Moral and democratic education -
Building ethical schools and teaching practices

18-21 June 2012
NLA University College, Bergen, Norway

We are delighted to welcome you to the 3rd SIG13 Symposium at NLA University College, Bergen, Norway. SIG 13 addresses questions of moral and democratic education from a scientific perspective with a particular focus on theoretically founded empirical research. Moral and democratic competences are key issues in today’s society. However, moral and democratic education mostly play a minor role in teaching, and even where it is seen as important, it is usually not based on research outcomes. The aim of SIG 13 is to promote research based moral and democratic learning, development, and education, both in school and outside.

Submissions
We welcome submissions in all fields related to moral and democratic education. We particularly invite proposals within the symposium’s main theme, Building ethical schools and teaching practices. Taking into account the potentials and limitations posed by pupils’ age, by the teachers, by the schools as systems, by the families or by any other possible factor, the main theme is formulated in the following subtopics:

  • How can ethical schools be built?
  • How can values and knowledge be integrated in education?

We welcome not only presentations of finished research projects but also papers or posters presenting ongoing research and preliminary results. Proposals should place the research in a wider theoretical context and include some reference to methodological approaches. Of the high quality papers within the field of the symposium’s main theme, our intention is to edit a book for publishing.
